Those discoveries were the parent of the next act — Filmstrip. Filmstrip is an amazing display of choreography and imagination — and one of our favorite acts. The performers are in perfect synchronization as they weave through the strip.

After a rousing end, we left the Kodak with a sense of wonderment at all of the innovative techniques assembled for this production. The creative team that spoke with us after the show mentioned that due to the long-term nature of this show, the production will grow and develop over time, due to the needs of the artists involved, but for now, they have an amazing and energetic cast and crew that is willing to bring this quality show to audiences for the long run!

The Kiriki seem to reflect the genre of early science fiction films. They defy gravity, as the acrobats spin on the feet of their compatriots and spring to new heights. This was another performance that we enjoyed, due to its high energy level and amazing skill. After the Kiriki perform, we are taken back to reality when the curtain is pulled away — revealing a grand movie set. This sequence was completely full of wonder and action.

Performers, crew, and sets are in kinetic motion everywhere. Cirque describes this sequence as being a mix of teeterboard one acrobat jumps and sends the other flying — photo — left , in red , floor gymnastics, Spanish Web a spinning single aerial rope with a loop that the flyer can lock their foot or wrist into- photo — right side , aerial silks similar to aerial straps, but made with sturdy silks instead of a rope , and amazing choreography of costumed extras.

Those extras — including aliens, cowboys, a moose head, and a host of crew — really help to bring the scene to life. I commented afterwards that I might have to see this again, just to catch details I missed this time. Once the wrap is called on the set, another act is revealed — a custodian and broom take the center stage in an elaborately woven dance — all below a beautiful trapeze artist. This sequence was so fluid, with the sweeping motions of the broom mirroring the curves and spins of trapeze flyer.

I was so drawn to this visual that I truly found myself on the edge of my seat, with it leaving a strong impression of joy in my memory. Now that we have seen motion and the process of making pictures, it turns out that Scarlett remember her?

The era of the black and white gangster films gives way to the presence of a 3 story hotel on the Kodak stage.

There begins a multilevel chase in which we follow the hero as he searches for the kidnapped Scarlett, throughout the levels of the hotel. The building appears to move from story to story, as the up and down search progresses — and in fact, it does! The hotel chase also subtly transitions the audience from black and white film to the new technology of color cinema. The chase brings our gangsters into a colorful world inspired by Dick Tracy.

The hotel sinks into the stage to reveal a fight breaking out on the rooftops, as the rescue attempt is made. This is now the set for the trampoline acrobats.

They made the transition from set to set seem effortless, like gravity had no effect on them. While amazingly choreographed, the act had one flaw — its length. After a while, it felt forced and it lost its hold on me and my earlier fascination with the moving hotel faded. It would have been nice if Scarlett had been rescued just a bit sooner….

After her rescue, Scarlett and Buster are finally united in a touching love scene. We think we would have enjoyed the elegance of this performance more, had they not lost our attentiveness with the length of the Rooftops trampoline. At last it was time to bring us back to life with the finale, which did not disappoint.

The featured act was a synchronized aerial ball, which was projected onto the stage a la Buzby Berkley. The performance solidly demonstrated the confidence and professionalism of the flyers. When one of the trapezes twisted suddenly during a movement and its flyer never lost a beat!

She simply posed glamorously until such a point that the trapeze motion regained synchronization with the rest of the troupe. Before you go, check the IRIS ticketing website to make sure the show will not be dark closed during your visit. The show is dark on Mondays, some holidays, and again during Academy Award season.

You enter the Kodak Theater on Level 1 of the complex. The box office is also on this level. The ability to mix fantasy and reality is precisely what makes cinema such a powerful medium. IRIS , with its heady mix of multimedia and live performance, manages to multiply this potentiality to the nth degree. IRIS has many characters — some of them even talk — but what little acting is involved is more along the lines of a comedy sketch or a ballet.

Buster and Scarlett, the principal characters, express themselves primarily through movement. Very few cinematic references in the show refer to specific actors, characters or films, however, but rather to cinema more generally. To go looking for a plot in IRIS is really to miss the point. Cirque du Soleil is a circus, after all! One scene involves lots of gymnastic Martian-like characters who do flips on top of each other without ever touching the ground, sometimes stacked four high.

During the most dangerous stunts, a spotter will appear as a safety precaution. Fortunately, most stunts came off perfectly. The beauty of it all is enough to make you cry. Besides the more typical circus performers, like trapeze artists, IRIS includes some incredibly flexible contortionists. Of course, some of their unnatural-looking contortions are eerie and frightening, but others are beautifully elegant and graceful.

One of the strengths of IRIS is the sheer variety of the show.
