Lindsay encourages Nick to pursue a career in music. Nick continues to practice with his current band, but quickly decides he's better than them. Lindsay encourages Nick to audition for a bigger local band. When things don't go well in the audition, Lindsay is there to comfort Nick. Sam, Bill, and Neal struggle with having to shower in gym class. S1, Ep7. Sam, Neal, and Bill befriend a pretty new transfer student, but soon fear of losing her to the popular crowd and try to win her over with a series of fun things they plan for her.

Lindsay, Nick, Daniel, and Ken decide to get fake IDs so they can see a hot local band perform at a bar. However, after they go through the trouble of getting their IDs and going into the bar, the group is stunned to find out who the hot local bands lead singer is. S1, Ep8.

Lindsay and Nick get more serious, and her parents give unwanted advice. Sam joins the yearbook staff to get closer to Cindy, who thinks of him only as a friend. S1, Ep9. Sam tries out to be the school mascot hoping to impress Cindy. Meanwhile, Daniel, Ken, and Kim suddenly become the basketball team's most rabid fans following a series of run-ins with jocks from the rival school, Lincoln High.

Lindsay tries to figure out the best way to break up with Nick. S1, Ep Lindsay's parents are convinced Kim is leading their daughter down a path toward drugs and sex, so they consider taking a peek in her diary. Meanwhile, Bill is tired of the same jocks picking the teams during P.

The adults may be the ones learning lessons from the students. A car accident results in Lindsay deciding to stop hanging out with her "freak" friends. She decides to rejoin the mathletes and start hanging out with Millie again. Sam adopts a new modern hair style in the hopes of impressing Cindy. When this fails, he seeks out a new wardrobe. Kim invites Lindsay to dinner, explaining that she needs to introduce a nice friend to her parents so they would stop bothering her to sell her car. When Mr. Kowchevski threatens to force Daniel to repeat algebra for another year if he doesn't study well and pass an upcoming test. Naturally Lindsay offers to help him study for it. But instead of helping him to pass Lindsay finds herself helping Daniel to cheat after Daniel manages to steal a test from the teacher's office.

Kowchevski, suspicious of Daniel's surprisingly high grades, rightly accuses the duo of cheating. Sam begins sex education class and Daniel tries to help Sam with his doubts by giving him a pornographic film. Nick realizes if he doesn't make a career out of being a drummer, his father is going to make him join the army. Lindsay attempts to remedy this first by pressuring the band to practice more, which results in the band breaking up when Nick thinks he is better than they are.

Lindsay then gets Nick an audition for the band Dimension. Unfortunately, the audition goes miserably and Nick comes to terms with the fact that his drumming isn't going to save him from joining the army.

Lindsay tries to comfort Nick. Meanwhile, when the physical education department at McKinley mandates that all students must shower after class, Sam avoids the shower at all costs, afraid to be naked in front of his peers. As the popular crowd shows interest in her, the geeks take Maureen out on a night of all-you-can-eat dining in order to keep from losing her. Lindsay and her friends try to buy fake IDs to see the band Feedback perform at a local bar.

Nick begins making more aggressive advances towards Lindsay. Most of his advances end up making her feel more disturbed than love struck. Tension is created between Sam and Bill when Bill is paired with Sam's crush, Cindy, as her science partner. Sam becomes the McKinley basketball team's new mascot after the former mascot Shia LaBeouf ends with a broken arm. Sam becomes closer to Cindy but instead of winning her heart, he increasingly becomes frustrated with her apparent desire to be nothing more than friends.

He is also hurt because of her obsessive crush over the basketball team's star athlete, Todd Schellinger Riley Smith. Bill is tired of being confined to deep right field during PE baseball games.
